Callum's diary

Callum Davidson was amongst the medals at the North West Mini Mon competition at Sutton Sports Centre, St Helens on Sunday 27th November 2011. The young judoka, who trains at Greenbank Judo Club which is based at The United Reformed Church, Grosvenor Road, Birkdale, took a credible bronze medal.
Callum won his first fight by ippon and then fought for the silver medal position. Despite a series of attacks Callum's opponent held on to gain a narrow victory.

Callum's workrate was phenomenal and we're all very proud in the display he gave today.

The weekend of 1st and 2nd October 2011 saw Liverpool host the 2011 GB World Cup and a number of Greenbank club members and their families attended the Liverpool Echo Arena to witness some world class judo. Saturday saw Ashley McKenzie (-60kg) and Lewis Keeble (-66kg) fight for GB. McKenzie powered his way to the final with the home crowd fully behind him winning gold to secure his first GB World Cup medal. Keeble fought in the bronze medal final but missed out on a medal after being beaten by wazari. However, the most memorable part was when one of Keeble's opponents was thrown for ippon but refused to accept the decision. Unfortunately the throw was repeated on the large screens for all to see and in one single motion the crowd stood and pointed out the throw to the disbelieving opponent. This turned out not to be the only occassion that the crowd made their presence noticable!
The second time this phenomenon occurred was on Sunday during the -81kg, -90kg, -100kg and +100kg categories. GB gained two further medals with James Austin (-100kg) and Matthew Purssey (-90kg) taking bronze. The crowd again made their presence known with what could be called questioning the referee's decision! During one contest an opponent conceded a penalty that at first was not given by the referee. What first started out as a murmur soon increased into a crescendo of 'SHIDO! SHIDO!' (I believe it started somewhere in Row I - you know who you are!!!) After a quick consultation with the judges the shido was given. It was quite an amazing turnaround!

During the event several young Greenbank members obtained autographs and photos with a number of competitors and a British Judo Legend (one Mr Neil Adams!) and to say that we were all inspired by this event is an understatement! Finally everyone at the club would like to say a big thank you to Suzy for organising the tickets and getting everyone some of the best seats in the house.

Wirral gold and silver

Two young judokas from Greenbank Judo club continued their impressive display of judo talent as they claimed medals at a Red & Yellow belt competition held at Woodchurch Leisure Centre, Wirral on Saturday 17th September 2011.

Callum Davidson took gold in his weight catergory winning all four of his fights, improving on his last appearance at this competition where he gained a silver medal. Attacking from the start Callum put his opponents under pressure using an array of techniques. His first fight was won by osaekomi (hold down victory) and the second contest showed his determination and skill. Trailing with 20 seconds left Callum pressed home with a fluid attack winning by wazari. Callum's final two contests were won by outscoring his opponent and again winning by osaekomi respectively.

Oliver Bigley gained a silver medal in his catergory impressing with his strength and tactics during hard fought contests. After securing his first win by osaekomi Oliver continued his strong start in his second contest with a confident display before narrowly losing out. However, Oliver bounced straight back in his next contest to win by osaekomi; turning and holding his opponent expertly and clinched the silver medal.

The level of judo in this competition was exceptional and both players adapted their skills to overcome difficult and experienced opponents.

Head Coach Jason Jenner said: "This is a tremendous result for these young players and the club. With continued development these judokas are gaining confidence and sharpness which is evidenced in the medals they've won. We're continuing to see real improvements in all our young players here at the club."

Wirral Competition

Saturday 11th June 2011 saw five members of the club attend Woodchurch Leisure Centre, Wirral to compete in a Red and Yellow belts competition.
After registering with officials the team took part in a short warm up and then began the competition. All five members were in separate weight categories so there was a good chance of success across five categories.
The standard of judo was very high across the competition and the Greenbank team competed extremely well using their skills and techniques to excellent use. This was borne out in three of their fights being won by straight ippons and wazaari awasete ippon.
At the end of the competition the final medal haul for Greenbank Judo Club was:

Carrie Newnham = Gold Medal
Callum Davidson = Silver Medal
Jake Newnham = Silver Medal
Ben Roberson = Bronze Medal
Louis Sumner = Bronze Meda
This was a fantastic result for these players who fought hard to ensure they were amongst the medals. Even more so as this was the first competition that all five had ever been in which makes these results even more special. It was also pleasing to see that they took part in the competition in the true spirit of judo (as did the rest of the competitors) and that they conducted themselves in a manner that was a credit to themselves and to Greenbank Judo Club. It would appear that the future of Greenbank Judo Club is bright!!

Andrew Billingsley

"My life & judo"

Andrew Billingsley first started judo in 1983 aged 14, with his cousin, at the Bridgefield Forum in Liverpool. His coach was Chris Kerr.

Andrew competed for his grades and achieved 10th mon (green belt). He entered competitions at Birmingham, Sutton High Leisure Centre, Kirby, St Helens and Netherley. (pictured right)

In 1985 Andrew joined the army and continued his judo. Andrew fought for the army on several occasions at company level, winning a silver at Bordon in Hampshire.

In 1993 Andrew joined Darlington Judo Club for a short period competing in one competition in Sunderland.

In 2009 he found us in Southport, where with his son, he has been a great asset.

Andrew notes that the biggest changes in judo he has seen are the introduction of a red belt for grades, not competing for lower grades and less time given in competitions for ne-waza.

Andrew

"I started at Greenbank Judo Club in March 2009, as I wanted to start judo again before I was 40 years old. I turned up a couple of months before that but bottled it. I mainly wanted to get fit and my intention was not to grade. I wanted to start from white belt again as well as I felt that I would not have the knowledge to wear the green belt after such a long absence from judo. With encouragement I decided to grade and now my ambition is to obtain at least my first Dan and then my coaches qualification. I want to do this before I retire from the police .I am a member of Merseyside Police Judo Club and have been training with them until recently when we lost our venue."

Introductory licence's and recreational licenses are available from the BJA but these do not allow students to grade or compete in licensed BJA competitions

Regular grading's will be carried out, and these are charged at £9.50 each. BJA licence forms are available from Jason or Suzy.

When renewing your BJA licence please note that all classes are now Greenbank Judo Club, number 18142, representing Merseyside, Lancashire or the North West Area.
New Licence Holders

Please can all new licence holders let us know when they receive their red belts and licenses as we need to diary you for future gradings

Child Protection Officers.

We have a Child Protection Officer for each of our Friday & Wednesday classes.

The CPO's help keep an eye on the running of the classes, ensuring that the safety of the children is paramount at all times. As membership of the club is increasing at a rapid rate, we feel that it can only be of a benefit to the club to have the extra eyes and knowledge.

Subscriptions

Several parents have asked if they can make block payments, instead of bringing £3.00 each session. We are more than happy to accommodate this method of payment, and if any parents wish to, we have enclosed a slip at the back of the newsletter to enable block payments to be made. The amount of sessions to be paid for is entirely up to individuals. If a week is missed then the payment can be carried forward. We will issue further payment slips as and when each child is due to make a further payment.
Please note: our standard payment method of paying on the night will always remain and this is just a further option

In general

School holidays are always approaching. We remain open during the holidays, and continue to pay the church rent for this period. We hope we can rely on your continued support during these times. It is always much appreciated

The refreshments for both parents and Judokas are continuing to be a huge success. We have however had several parents suggesting we make a small charge to contribute towards the cost. We are reluctant to impose a charge and the refreshments will remain free for the foreseeable future. If however anyone wishes to make a donation, feel free to put change in the tin.

PARENTS - Can you all remember not to step on the mat with shoes on.. Those caught will be made to do 20 press ups, or pay £1 towards club funds!!!!
